Digital Transformation at MRT Castings

How We’re Leveraging Data to Improve Outcomes for Our Customers

At MRT, we’ve always prioritised the adoption and application of new technology. While we already operate one of the most modern and well-equipped die casting and machining facilities in the UK, we’re continuously looking for opportunities to take our processes to new heights.

To stay ahead, we know we need to make better use of the strengths we already have – particularly when it comes to improving efficiency, increasing process control and supporting more technically demanding components.

Our current focus is on data.

Across our diecasting cells, CNC machining centres and metrology equipment, we collect significant volumes of process and quality data on every component we produce. Alongside this, our ERP system holds a detailed history of order patterns, production performance and material traceability, while our CAD and casting simulation platforms capture the full design intent behind each part.

Individually, these systems are highly valuable. However, the scale and complexity of the data they generate can sometimes make it difficult to extract meaningful, joined-up insight.

As artificial intelligence tools continue to mature, we are now seeing practical opportunities to connect these data sources more effectively.

By combining AI with real-world manufacturing data, we can begin to identify patterns, improve prediction and rationalise reporting ultimately supporting more consistent and efficient production for our customers.

Building a Digital Strategy

Over the past six months, MRT has been working with the UK’s Made Smarter programme to explore how digital tools can support the next phase of our development.

As part of this, our Managing Director Phil Rawnson recently completed the Leading Digital Transformation qualification, delivered by the University of Salford. The programme has encouraged us to rethink how our systems interact, moving away from standalone platforms towards a more connected and responsive manufacturing environment.

The aim is to create a more integrated network across our production equipment, automation, software and data analysis tools – allowing us to respond more quickly to challenges and opportunities across the business.

Moving From Insight to Application

Last month, our department leads took part in a workshop with our long-standing IT partner Riven Associates. The session explored the current capabilities of business-focused AI tools, where they can add value, and how they might be applied within a manufacturing setting like ours.

It’s fair to say the scale of opportunity was mind-blowing! More importantly, it has sparked ongoing conversations across the business about how these tools can be applied in a practical, controlled way.

We are now developing a clear roadmap and policy framework to guide the use of AI, automation and digital systems across MRT, ensuring that any implementation is aligned with our commitment to long-term customer value and manufacturing products to be proud of.

Looking Ahead

Digital transformation isn’t about adopting technology for its own sake. Rather, we know that digital transformation can equip us with the right tools to support better engineering decisions, as well as more consistent production.

This journey has one destination in mind: to create better outcomes for our customers.

We’ll be sure to share updates as this work progresses.
